Quotes

“There’s so much talent in Scotland and there have always been incredible films coming out of it […] So it’s great that there are loads of Scottish producers and actors and writers telling their own story, I think that’s very important.”

“I guess lockdown is just really teaching everyone, especially me ‘cos I’m really bad at it, to slow down a little bit. In normal life you feel you need to keep running, as soon as one job finishes, you have to get the next. But when the whole world pauses, you don’t need to.”

“Because I grew up in a Scotttish setting I didn’t really think about being half Chinese. It was interesting getting into acting which likes to put people in boxes and I started to think about being half Chinese, half Scottish, with half my family living in Hong Kong.”

“To be honest I’d love to be in Scotland. I love my family. I’d love to be in the Highlands of Scotland with my mum. Most of my work at the moment is down here, but when I grow up and get married and have kids, I might move back.”

“[In Scotland] Everyone was white, so being Asian was different. But in this house, my friend, who is half-Spanish, was the whitest person there. Suddenly, for instance, I could speak to the Thai girl downstairs about cooking. In London you can be from anywhere and feel like you’re from there.”

“I think that because of this mixture of being mixed race and moving so much, and also because my mum lives in a different part of Scotland now, there was definitely an element of feeling rootless, and not really knowing where I came from for quite a long time.”

“You never see yourself in a box as a human, in general, but within the acting industry they need to have you in boxes, and suddenly it’s kind of forced upon you to think about that.”

“I grew up with not a lot of representation on screen, and around a lot of white people, so there wasn’t really a role model for me to aspire to.”

““It’s not helpful to anyone to airbrush your experience. I went to uni and spent six years working to make enough money to get to this place – and to get good enough [at the craft.] It takes the time it takes.”

“Being an actor, you spend a lot of time unemployed. I usually spend my time off watching loads of films anyway, so there’s been a lot of that and reading.”

“I secretly always wanted to be in a band when I was younger, but was never cool enough or had the confidence or skills.”

Marli Siu used to be a struggling actress during her early days. However, her hard work paid off in the long run as she keeps on rising to the top with more incoming opportunities.
