Career
She found her passion for acting in her childhood when she was at a filming event led by the National Deaf Children’s Society.
It was there when she met film director Ted Evans who later cast her in his award-winning short movie titled The End (2011).
She then proceeded to apply to Deafinitely Youth Theater before continuing her studies at the University for the Creative Arts and pursuing a degree in fashion design.
From that point forward, she started showing up on a few TV series such as Casualty (2017), Summer of Rockets (2019), and, her first breakthrough, EastEnders (2020).
In the TV series EastEnders (2020), she impacted the world forever as the soap’s very first deaf actress to play a deaf character who uses the means of British Sign Language to communicate with people.

Quotes
“You can’t write about deaf people without a deaf person’s input. Nothing about us, without us. A consultant should be involved at all stages when working with deaf people.”
“I’m constantly fighting to have my deaf identity represented but end up being made to feel like my voice isn’t heard – I end up feeling torn. Torn between representing the deaf community and telling our story but wanting to have a career with good working relationships.”
“I hope I will do the deaf community proud and break down more barriers.”
“I feel like now that I’ve finished ‘EastEnders,’ I want to do more TV programmes and explore more about deaf people’s experiences. It’s not just about deaf story, but it’s also a storyline that just happened to be deaf.”
“We hear a lot about being female and how women appear in the dating scene, but as a deaf woman, it’s a very different experience.”
“How is a young deaf actor supposed to get their foot in the door, when the door is firmly shut on them from the start?”
“I feel really glad that I knew who I was from a very early age. I never ever once thought: ‘I wish I could hear.’ Because if I was hearing, I’d be a completely different person. I wouldn’t have the life experience that I have. I’d just be really normal. I don’t want to be normal – that’s boring.”
“It is okay to make mistakes, we all do. If we don’t make mistakes, how are we going to learn?”
“Before I had an agent, I tried to apply for Spotlight membership and was rejected more than once.”
“I often receive a script that it is not quite right. They will write my characters who are in a room with a big group of people arguing with each other, following everything that is being said and even repeating things back to them.”
“My reality isn’t always nice.”
“What I do know is that disabled people shouldn’t be responsible for curing non-disabled people of their ignorance.”
“Saying ‘no’ is a privilege most people take for granted, I knew I would be the first deaf dancer and saying ‘no’ to that felt wrong. This was a big platform, I knew how popular ‘Strictly’ was, so, in the end I said yes – I would do it for the deaf community. Little did I know how magical and beautiful it would also be for me personally.”
“Being the first deaf person to play a regular character is a huge privilege and was long overdue.”
“It’s not enough to only elevate me, there are so many talented deaf people out there and thousands of amazing deaf stories to be told.”
“It’s a joy to be deaf.”
“If you put the right support in place, get it all set up, then I can do my job as easily as anyone else.”
Rose Ayling-Ellis is living proof that deaf people can achieve just as much as others do. It is no wonder that she gets looked up to a lot by the younger generation.
